Conceptual project of a photography studio and residence for Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto.
The space is inspired by his series “Theaters,” where he would shoot an entire movie in a single, long-exposure frame.
The resulting photograph beholds a shining white screen, a perfect ‘void object‘ containing all light. The eye darts between the white square and the various shapes and shadows of the movie theater, carving out the immense space, and always returning to the solitary white void.
In a similar way, the studio and residence takes form between a perfect ‘void object’ and a carved solid. In circulation, one must always go through the ‘void object’ before arriving in any of the rooms of the studio.
The space thus exists between the tectonics of ordered light and the stereotomics of carved-out earth.

Academic conceptual project located along the Tiber river in Rome. Partially occupied by an underground parking garage, this site on via Giulia hosts the ruins of an ancient Roman stable and an ancient Roman bathhouse, which inspired the program of the complex.
The baths follow the ancient sequence of circulation of apodyterium, tepidarium, caldarium, and frigidarium (or, changing room, warm room, steam room, and cold bath).
The complex is also home to a gymnasium, a belvedere, or viewing point, and an underground museum and gallery space to honor the underlying ancient ruins.
The formal language was inspired by the interaction between travertine marble and water in a travertine quarry. The sun exposure of the site dictated the form of the complex, as if carved by the sun.
